ESSEX COUNTY USED TIRE RECYCLING AND PAPER SHREDDING DAY 

Date:    Saturday, September 14
Time:    9am to 1pm
Place:    Essex County Fleet Maintenance Facility (Public Works) – 99 West Bradford Avenue, Cedar Grove, NJ

  • Old tires with or without rims will be collected. Tire rims will be recycled as scrap metal. 
  • Important paper documents can be destroyed safely and securely. All shredded paper will be recycled. 

Essex County residents must provide proof of residency at the site. This is not for commercial or industrial facilities. For more information, call Essex County Department of Public Works at 973-226-8500, Ext. 2580. 

ESSEX COUNTY SENIOR WELLNESS DAY 

Date:    Tuesday, September 24
Time:    10am to 2pm
Place:   Essex County Codey Arena – 560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange, NJ 

Essex County senior citizens are invited to attend Essex County Senior Wellness Day. Health screenings, information about nutrition and exercise demonstrations will be available. Various Essex County agencies, including the Division of Senior Services, will have representatives on site to talk about available programs for which seniors are eligible. Also participating are area hospitals, senior day care facilities, local nursing homes and other social service providers. Free. For transportation, call 973.618.1280. 

FALL FAMILY FESTIVAL

Date:    Saturday, September 28
Time:    11am to 4pm
Place:    Essex County Environmental Center – 621B Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland, NJ

Celebrate the autumn equinox and learn about the environment. There will be fun-filled activities for the entire family to enjoy, including hands-on nature games and crafts, canoeing (weather permitting), Native American life, pumpkin patch, petting zoo, food, and more. Admission is free, but some items will be for sale.

Items being accepted: Pesticides/Herbicides, Paint thinners and solvents, Oil based paints and stains, Chemistry sets, Propane tanks (barbecue type), Pool chemicals, Automotive fluids (antifreeze, motor oil, steering fluids, etc.). Darkroom/Photographic chemicals, Lithium and NiCad batteries, Fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, Mercury and products containing mercury, Gasoline/Kerosene, Household cleaning fluids, Car batteries, Fire extinguishers (home), Driveway sealer, Aerosol spray paints 

Items NOT being accepted: Latex paint, Unlabeled or unidentified materials, Asbestos, Regulated medical waste or infectious waste, Commercial or industrial waste, Empty containers, Explosives, munitions, ordnance or reactive materials, Household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V), Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms

Items NOT being accepted: Smoke detectors, Carbon monoxide alarms

The Essex County canine costume parades have grown into a favorite Halloween celebration. Bring your pet or just come to see the creative costumes. Prizes will be awarded. Free. 

GARDENS AGLOW

Place:   Essex County Presby Memorial Iris Gardens – 474 Upper Mountain Avenue, Upper Montclair, NJ 

View the gardens at dusk as they come to life with artfully carved jack-o-lanterns supplied by local high school art departments. There will be activities, entertainment, and refreshments. Free

THE DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION’S DRUG TAKE BACK DAY

Date:    Saturday, October 26 

The Essex County Division of Community Health Services and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) invite the public to participate in Drug Take Back Day. Unused prescription and over the counter drugs can be brought to any of the sites. Identifying information from labels such as name, address, phone # or doctor’s name should be removed. Disposal is free, easy and anonymous.

Come trick-or-treating at the Zoo. With candy stations throughout the grounds, everyone is sure to have a “sweet” time at this family-friendly event. All attendees must purchase a ticket. FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS OPEN
STUDIOS & SALE

Place:   Essex County Riker Hill Art Park – 276 Beaufort Avenue, Livingston 

Artists in residence work in a variety of disciplines, including clay, jewelry, glass blowing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography. Visit a variety of different art studios, talk to the artists, purchase artwork, and stop by the gallery to view a compilation exhibition. Free admission but artwork is for sale.
