The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Drug
Take Back Day

Saturday, April 27, 2019

The Essex County Division of Community Health Services and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) invite the public to participate in Drug Take Back Day.  Unused prescription and over the counter drugs can be brought to any of the sites.  Identifying information from labels such as name, address, phone# or doctor’s name should be removed.  Disposal is free, easy and anonymous.

Earth Day Celebration at the Essex County Environmental Center

Saturday, April 27  *  11am to 4pm
621B Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland

On this special day, celebrate nature with crafts, games, and recreational opportunities, such as canoeing and hiking.  Enjoy demonstrations, information, a local eco-vendors’ sales, with Environmental Center staff and partner groups on hand to guide you throughout the day.  Admission is FREE but eco-vendors will be selling merchandise.  Sponsored by PSE&G, Covanta, Rezza’s and NJ Clean Communities.

Mother’s Day Annual Plant Sale

Friday, May 3 from 10am to  4pm

Stop by the Rutgers Master Gardeners’s annual plant sale for wide variety of annuals, perennials, ornamentals, shrubs, small trees, tomatoes and herbs.  For more details, call the Rutgers Master Gardeners’ Helpline at 973-228-2210 from Monday to Thursday between 10am and 2pm.  Admission is FREE but plants will be for sale.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

Saturday, May 4  *  8:30am to 4pm
Essex County Fleet Maintenance Facility (Public Works)
NEW LOCATION –  99 West Bradford Avenue, Cedar Grove

Items being accepted:

  • Pesticides/Herbicides
  • Paint thinners and solvents
  • Oil based paints and stains
  • Chemistry sets
  • Propane tanks (barbecue type)
  • Pool chemicals
  • Automotive fluids (antifreeze, motor oil, steering fluids, etc.)
  • Darkroom/Photographic chemicals
  • Lithium and NiCad batteries
  • Fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts
  • Mercury and products containing mercury
  • Gasoline/Kerosene
  • Household cleaning fluids
  • Car batteries
  • Fire extinguishers (home)
  • Driveway sealer
  • Aerosol spray paints

Items NOT being accepted:

  • Latex paint
  • Unlabeled or unidentified materials
  • Asbestos
  • Regulated medical waste or infectious waste
  • Commercial  or industrial waste
  • Empty containers
  • Explosives, munitions, ordnance or reactive materials
  • Household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V)
  • Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms

Essex County Fishing Derby

For children ages 15 years and under. Free to enter.

Thursday, May 9 – Grover Cleveland Park, Caldwell/Essex Fells
Thursday, May 16 – Verona Park, Verona
Thursday, May 30 – Weequahic Park, Newark
Thursday, June 6 – Irvington Park, Irvington
Saturday, June 8 – Monte Irvin Orange Park, Orange
Thursday, June 13 – Orange Reservoir, South Mountain Recreation Complex, West Orange

Thursday registration begins at 5pm, Derby begins at 6pm, Awards given at 7:45pm
Saturday registration begins at 8am, Derby begins at 9am, Awards given at 11:15am

Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles.

Essex County Open House

Saturday, June 1  *  10am to 2pm
Essex County Turtle Back Zoo, 560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange

The carnival-like event combines games and activities to entertain and provide information to raise public awareness about the programs and services provided by Essex County.  Admission to Turtle Back Zoo is FREE.
